Winter Heating Checklist for Lanarkshire and Glasgow Homes

The autumn checklist

Run through this in October, before the heating goes on full time. Anything you cannot resolve is far cheaper to fix as a booked appointment than as a December emergency.

• Book the annual service — it also keeps the warranty valid
• Run the heating for an hour and check every radiator warms evenly
• Check boiler pressure is between 1 and 1.5 bar when cold
• Insulate the external condensate pipe against freezing
• Test the carbon monoxide alarm and replace it if over seven years old
• Exercise the stopcock so it will actually close in an emergency

Frozen condensate: the classic Scottish fault

If your boiler shuts down during a cold snap and shows a fault code with a gurgling noise, the external condensate pipe has frozen. Pouring warm — not boiling — water over the exposed section usually clears it. The permanent fix is re-routing the pipe internally or upsizing and lagging it, which we do across Glasgow and Lanarkshire.
