Step one: isolate the water

Find your internal stopcock — usually under the kitchen sink, in a hall cupboard, or beside the bathroom in older tenement flats. Turn it clockwise until it stops. If the stopcock is seized (very common in Glasgow properties that have never had it exercised), open every cold tap in the property to drain the system down and reduce pressure at the leak.

• Switch off the boiler and any immersion heater
• Move furniture and electricals out of the affected area

Step two: make it safe electrically
