Burst pipes are most common after a freeze-thaw and in older properties with worn joints. What you do in the first few minutes decides how much damage you are dealing with.
What to do immediately
- Turn off the internal stopcock — usually under the kitchen sink or in a hall cupboard
- Open cold taps to drain the system down
- Switch off electrics in affected areas at the consumer unit if water is near fittings
- Turn the boiler and heating off
- Contain water with buckets and towels, and lift what you can off the floor
Common causes in Glasgow properties
Freeze damage to unlagged pipes in lofts and unheated spaces, corroded compression joints in older tenement flats, failed push-fit connections under kitchen units, and pinholes in buried heating pipework.
