Heat pumps 7 min read7 April 2026

Heat pumps work well in the right property and disappoint badly in the wrong one. Rather than selling one to everybody, we survey first — and in a fair number of Lanarkshire homes we recommend a high-efficiency boiler instead.
What makes a good candidate
Insulation and radiator sizing matter far more than the badge on the unit. Better-insulated East Kilbride, Stewartfield and modern Hamilton estate housing regularly performs well. Older stone-built property in Lanark or Carluke usually needs insulation work first.
- Loft and cavity insulation already in place
- Radiators large enough for lower flow temperatures, or replaceable
- Room for a hot water cylinder
- Outdoor space with clear airflow for the unit
- Currently on LPG, oil or electric heating — the biggest savings sit here
Running costs, honestly
A well-designed heat pump in a well-insulated property will typically beat LPG and oil comfortably. Against mains gas the picture is closer and depends heavily on your tariff and how well the system is commissioned. We give you the numbers for your property rather than a national average.
Installation and disruption
Most Lanarkshire installations take two to five days depending on radiator and cylinder work. The system is commissioned, balanced and the controls explained before handover, and we service heat pumps annually to keep them delivering the running costs they were sold on.

Frequently asked questions
Are East Kilbride homes suitable for heat pumps?
Many are — better-insulated G74 and G75 estates are among the strongest candidates in South Lanarkshire, and the survey confirms it before you commit.
Do I need to replace all my radiators?
Not always. The heat loss survey identifies which rooms need larger radiators for lower flow temperatures.
Do you service existing heat pumps?
Yes, across Lanarkshire — refrigerant checks, filters, controls and weather compensation tuning.
