Scottish heating seasons are long, so small efficiency gains compound. These are ordered from free to paid.
Free adjustments
- Lower the boiler's flow temperature to around 55–60°C so a condensing boiler actually condenses
- Set the room thermostat one degree lower and use TRVs for the rest
- Shorten the heating schedule rather than turning the thermostat up
- Turn radiators down in unused rooms instead of closing doors on cold spaces
- Bleed radiators that are cold at the top
Low-cost fixes
- Have the system balanced so every radiator gets its designed flow
- Fit reflective panels behind radiators on external walls
- Insulate exposed pipework and the hot water cylinder
- Service the boiler annually so it burns efficiently
Worthwhile upgrades
- Zoning and smart controls for room-by-room heating
- A magnetic filter and system clean to restore radiator output
- Replacing an old non-condensing boiler with a modern modulating unit
