The consumer unit is the safety hub of the installation. Older boards may still work, but they often lack the protection modern standards require.
Signs you need an upgrade
- Rewireable fuse wire rather than circuit breakers
- No RCD protection at all, or a single RCD covering everything
- A wooden or plastic enclosure where a metal one is now required
- Frequent nuisance tripping that takes out the whole house
- No spare ways for an EV charger, shower or kitchen circuit
What RCBOs change
Individual RCBOs give each circuit its own overcurrent and earth-fault protection. A fault in one circuit no longer takes the whole property off, which matters a great deal in rented flats and for anyone working from home.
Testing, certification and timing
An upgrade includes testing every existing circuit before energising, because pre-existing faults must be found rather than covered up. You receive an Electrical Installation Certificate and a schedule of test results. Most upgrades are a single day.
